Timeline to Process A.Y 2017-18 Income Tax Refunds Extended till 30th September

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the time for processing refunds in non-scrutiny cases for assessment year 2017-18 till 30th September 2021.

CBDT said in an order issued on 5th July, 2021 due to technical reasons, returns for various assessment years up to the assessment year 2017-18 that were filed validly could not be processed, and intimation was not provided to the taxpayer. This had led to a situation where the taxpayer was unable to get a legitimate refund.

Further, the Board said in the order “to mitigate genuine hardship being faced by taxpayers due to this issue, the Board hereby relaxes the time-frame prescribed and directs that all validly filed returns up to assessment year 2017-18 with refund claims, which could not be processed and have become time-barred, subject to exceptions, can be processed now with prior approval of principal chief commissioner or chief commissioner of income tax.” The intimation of such processing can be sent to the assessee concerned by 30th September 2021, the Board added.

However, returns selected for scrutiny, remaining unprocessed for any reason attributable to assessee or unprocessed since demand is showing as payable have been kept out of the extension time-frame.
